Te Rauparaha Arena – Porirua
1This Te Rauparaha Arena, named after the famous Maori leader, was constructed as a replacement for the old Porirua Recreation Centre. The new venue can hold 3000 people, hosting a number of indoor sports, including ANZ Championship netball – the Central Pulse use the stadium as an alternative home venue.
2Holmes Consulting provided structural and civil engineering services for this $17.5m, working in close collaboration with Porirua City Council and a wider group of project contributors. The designs required large three-court clear span space, a smaller warm-up gymnasium and ancillary office, ablution, concourse cafeteria, kitchen and auditorium facilities. Our work focused on delivering designs that worked within the tight budgets and timeframes for the project – and ultimately delivered a venue that provides a strong focal point for the people of Porirua and its surrounding areas.
3The Te Rauparaha arena is a vibrant and popular sports and events venue that’s already made a great contribution to the local community. It was delivered on time and to budget, receiving a 2009 Property Council New Zealand, Tourism and Leisure Excellence Award. It’s a great place to watch live sport, with an atmosphere matching many far larger venues.
