    Bayfair Shopping Centre

    PreviousNext

1Winner of the 2003 New Zealand Property Council Supreme Award, this renovation doubled the size of the existing 1990’s mall and added a 1,000 space, multilevel carpark and a Farmers store. Located in scenic Mt Maunganui, Bayfair has a host of local and national retailers, and serves as a focal point for the region’s retail shoppers.

2Holmes Consulting was brought in to solve some complicated geometrical problems, and lend our expertise to reconfiguring the existing mall with the new additions. This project was delivered in three main stages.  The first was a new carpark constructed of large precast concrete components, which we designed to minimise the number of columns required – reducing build time and optimising the space available for parking.

3The second stage was a two level Farmers store of standard concrete structure. We worked to create a simple, repeatable model that became the model for the design and construction of two level Farmers stores. The final stage was the reconfiguration of the existing mall, which was achieved without closing it for normal trading – a key goal of the brief.  This part of the work included inserting a new serpentine mall precinct through the existing 1990s building. We chose an innovative use of structural steel to deal with the complex geometry and fit with the existing construction.

4It’s often hard to drag yourself off the beautiful beach at Mt Maunganui, but we recommend a trip to Bayfair – if only to admire some stunning precast concrete in the carpark…
