Youth Justice North
1Youth justice facilities have an important part to play in our community, working to help young people get their lives back on track and find a better, safer path. Child, Youth and Family work hard to create the right environments for that to happen – including commissioning the design of facilities that have the right functionality and atmosphere to achieve their goals.
2Holmes Consulting provided structural engineering services for the Youth Justice North project, a 46 bed residential building with an additional secure wing. The facility also includes an administration block, an arts and culture block and a gymnasium. A new 600m public road, private ring road around the perimeter and a fully fenced 13,400 m2 sports field complete this development. We focused on delivering a functional, easy-to-construct design that used materials cleverly and sparingly.
3The project is based on a campus design which allows counsellors the option of working with the residents as individuals or in smaller groups, teaching life skills to minimise the chance of re-offending. Although a large proportion of New Zealand’s youths live in Auckland, this facility was the first of its kind in the region. The proximity to family and friends has helped residents stay connected with people they know, increasing their sense of connection to the places and people they know. An interesting project with a real social purpose.
