AFFCO Horotiu
1AFFCO’s Horotiu meat processing plant is one of the most modern, efficient buildings of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, with some very clever engineering behind, above and below the scenes. Starting from a blank sheet of paper, we provided ideas and creative expertise right across the project lifecycle, including civil, structural and architectural design services, coordination with plant suppliers and project management of the building construction. Our designs focused on enhancing productivity by establishing a building flow that suits the dynamic, high energy environment – ensuring workers have a comfortable, functional plant that supports their demanding daily work.
2The new plant includes updated designs of the beef processing floors, boning rooms and offal areas, as well as a new canteen and laundry. Designs incorporated New Zealand food safety regulations, the demands of USDA standard, and those of the EU. In addition, the plant was also built designed to be halal compliant. This wasn’t a new structure in isolation: our designs link it seamlessly to the existing buildings on site, improving the flow and efficiency of the entire facility. The plant stands as an example of resilient, performance based structure with the specific needs of the building’s workers at the centre of the Holmes Consulting creative process. We’re very proud of the end result.
