1The ANZ Tower represents a significant milestone in New Zealand engineering. With 42 levels, it was the tallest building in the country at the time of construction and it’s currently the second tallest commercial office building in the country. The Tower offers expansive views across the beautiful Waitemata Harbour – its size and position mean it’s one of the most valuable and well known commercial properties in Auckland.
2Our expert engineers were brought in to design a robust, resilient structure that was fit for purpose in the seismic environment. We optimised our designs using our custom non-linear time history analysis tools, which generate a complete view of the building’s likely performance over time.
This innovative performance based design approach enabled the appropriate levels of public safety to be maintained, refining the reinforcing in the perimeter frame. The perimeter frame is reinforced concrete, which acts like a tube, providing the necessary earthquake resistance for the building.
3In partnership with the contractor, Hawkins Construction, Holmes Consulting developed a proprietary pre-cast system, which enabled a four-day floor construction cycle for the tower – significantly reducing the construction timeline, thereby reducing project costs. The design included a special pre-stressed double tee flooring system, achieving long spans for a reduced depth, to optimise floor to ceiling height. That feature has created a commercial space that’s far more pleasant and spacious for the occupants.
If you’re in Auckland, take a look at the ANZ Tower – it’s impressive from the outside, and it’s held together with some ingenious engineering.
