Arts Centre of Christchurch
1 The Arts Centre of Christchurch is a locally, nationally and internationally significant set of buildings, which gained even more significance as the devastating earthquakes irreparably destroyed so many other parts of the city’s built heritage. The cluster of 23 neo Gothic buildings suffered extensive damage in the earthquakes, and for a time there was concern that some or all of the structures would not be able to be returned to their former glory. Working closely with the Arts Centre of Christchurch team, and a broad group of contractors and partners, Holmes Consulting is leading an extensive restoration programme, already in progress for more than 6 years, and scheduled to continue for a number more.
2 As well as the structural work, our involvement with the Arts Centre project has included the civil engineering around the site. We’ve been pivotal in designing the new civil infrastructure to repair and replace damaged elements, as well as bringing the infrastructure up to modern standards. We’ve delivered wastewater, stormwater and site supply water designs, as well as the pavement and level designs. We’ve also led the integration of the civil designs with the mechanical and electrical aspects, working on a congested site with significant heritage and archaeological considerations.
3In a complex project with a number of stakeholders, partners and contractors, we’ve taken charge of the civil design co-ordination, tying the site together with a cohesive, intelligent civil plan. The Arts Centre is better connected, has improved flexibility for future uses, and is already popular with its many visitors. Alongside our extensive structural work on the historic Arts Centre, we’re proud to be such an important part of one of the world’s biggest heritage restorations.
