1Auckland Airport is consistently ranked one of the world’s best airports, servicing millions of local, national and international visitors each year. As the primary gateway to New Zealand, Auckland International Airport is the busiest airport in the country and second busiest in Australasia – playing a pivotal role in the tourism industry. The expansion of the Jean Batten International Terminal was entrusted to the technical experts at Holmes Consulting.
2The major expansion of the Jean Batten terminal presented a number of design challenges, including the need to maintain passenger and freight operations throughout the construction phase. Our smart design focused on delivering the project in three fast track stages, maintaining a fully functional terminal all the while – something of a miracle in an extremely busy airport environment.
3The project also demanded an engineering solution to provide flexibility for the terminal’s evolving needs in the future. In some areas, we designed for ease of future expansion to accommodate the airport’s rapid growth in the medium and long term. Balancing the need for a flexible grid with the creation of a robust, resilient structure – all to be constructed in a ‘business as usual’ environment – had our best engineers churning ideas around at the design table for quite some time! The ultimate result was a terminal that better delivers on the needs of staff, passengers and visitors, and is geared for ready adaptation and expansion as required.
