The Auckland Art Gallery Toi o T
āmaki has won the top prize, Building of the Year, at the World Architecture Festival.
The project is comprised of a new extension and a sensitive earthquake strengthening and refurbishment of the existing building. The architects on the project were Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp (FJMT) in conjunction with Archimedia.
The project has also won the Culture category at the awards. The awards were held in Singapore this past week and include a truly global list of amazing projects.
For those that have not yet had the opportunity to visit the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o T
āmaki , it is really a thing of beauty. From the careful details on the kauri canopy, and beautifully framed views into the park, to the art installations throughout, it is as much of an experience as the artwork that it contains. Congratulations to the architects for this achievement and to Auckland City for having the vision to undertake this work.
